about me

Ragul Balakrishnan

I'm a Cloud Solutions Architect with around 17 years in the industry, currently working independently as a freelance consultant. Over that time I've designed and run reliable, production-grade architecture and DevOps strategy across a genuinely varied set of industries — aviation, banking, cryptocurrency platforms, and fashion — each with its own definition of "this cannot go down."

Before going independent, most of my career was spent in DevOps and platform engineering roles, designing and building the automation that enables engineering teams to deploy reliably and at scale — CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and observability platforms. These are the systems that ultimately determine whether a production incident is resolved in minutes or escalates into a multi-hour outage.

RB Tech Talks is where I share that experience with a wider audience — deep dives into architectures and technologies I'm currently exploring, real production incidents and how they were resolved, and perspectives on articles and resources I come across that are worth a second look.

what I write about

Cloud architecture

AWS, GCP, and Azure — the design decisions, not just the service names.

Kubernetes & containers

Scheduling, autoscaling, and the operational reality of running a cluster.

IAM & security

Access control models that hold up once more than one person touches the account.

Cost & tradeoffs

Serverless vs containers, managed vs self-hosted — decided with real numbers.
